Halibut Design is the sole proprietorship design practice run by me, Hal Tangen. My specialty is creative and thoughtful design solutions to complex problems. I deliver start-to-finish design services for commercial architectural and residential projects. Services include site analysis, conceptual and schematic design, programming, space planning, design presentations, construction documentation, permitting, and construction. My practice strives to make a difficult process as easy as possible. I do this by combining years of experience, committed passion, and strong skills with an open, collaborative process.

Design
I believe buildings and houses should be designed from the inside out. It’s about how we live, how we work, and how we enjoy our time alone or with others. It started for me with an undergraduate degree in commercial interior design. Years later my interests in design led to a Masters in Architecture from the University of Washington. I also taught interior design as an adjunct instructor at Cornish College of the Arts for over a decade. I believe that good design can improve life and create opportunities to reach our potential.

Planning
Good design won’t work without a good floor plan. It’s where all projects start and is arguably the most important measure of a project’s success. No matter how good something looks, the plan better work. Planning is also a place of opportunity. I done hundreds of plans over the years on a huge variety of projects, from single-family homes, to tiny restaurants crammed into too small spaces, to huge offices spaces for thousands of people. There are opportunities everywhere. I’d like to add that my skills and experience include a thorough understanding of building and accessibility codes.

Construction Documents and Permitting
Construction Documents are the drawings we use to design, collaborate, permit, and build. It’s the product designers and architects produce. There is no more important aspect to design than this. The only way to understand the process of permitting and getting a project built is to do it many times. I’ve been responsible for obtaining over 100 building permits for a wide variety of projects

Design Visualization and 3D rendering
3D modeling and rendering is the most flexible and effective way to communicate a design idea. To make informed decisions it’s necessary to be clear about the choices. Halibut can build a model with material and finish options or create final design renderings for your design presentations. Software used include AutoCAD, SketchUp, Twinmotion, Photoshop
